Public speaking isn’t easy, but sharing the story of how you got into IT can be inspirational, especially to girls and young women looking for new career opportunities. Cristina Greysman of Sungard AS shares her experience with Dream IT, an initiative by CompTIA’s Advancing Women in IT Community, and why it’s important to spread the word, no matter the size of the audience. “It doesn’t matter if it’s eight people or 150 — it’s a valuable conversation,” Greysman said.

Many students in the diverse student body of Hoover Elementary in Cedar Rapids come from struggling families and nearly a quarter of their population is learning English for the first time. A donation from one of CompTIA’s member communities has been used on technology buys that will help students stay on track and help the school close its achievement gap.

Students at Boston’s Mildred Avenue K-8 School and Community Center can thank CompTIA’s IT Security Community and the Boston Celtics for help in renovating the center’s computer lab and teen space. With help from the Creating IT Futures Foundation, the IT Security Community donated $5,000 to the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, which allocated the donation to its Player Choice Grant, a grant that allows members of the Celtics roster to vote on where the money should go.

CertMaster came through for an Irish woman studying for her CompTIA A+ exam. Management consultant Olive Brennan Herbst said CompTIA’s new learning tool helped her not only memorize the material; it gave her a full understanding of the material being presented. “It helped me ensure I passed,” she said.

IT instructor Richard Tamme says the combined research from neurobiology, cognitive psychology and game studies used to create CertMaster will help hold students’ interest as they learn. “All those features are used in combination to create a very comprehensive learning tool that will work well for almost any student,” he said.
