CompTIA chief technology evangelist to speak at Australian Cyber Conference Canberra 2024

Mar 21, 2024

Dr. James Stanger will discuss the cybersecurity course corrections needed to address root causes, strengthen defenses and create a cyber-safe workplace

CANBERRA, Australia – Reimagining approaches to cybersecurity practices and upskilling cyber professionals will highlight remarks delivered by the chief technology evangelist for CompTIA, the leading nonprofit association for the global information technology (IT) industry and workforce, at the Australian Cyber Conference Canberra 2024.

Dr. James Stanger is scheduled to speak at three sessions during the conference, set for 25-27 March at the National Convention Center in Canberra. The conference theme is the “Future is Now,” recognition of the urgency to adapt and safeguard our digital landscape.

“The deluge of news about malware attacks, phishing scams, ransomware demands and other vulnerabilities should be a jarring wake-up call for everyone,” Dr. Stanger said. “Our response to these threats needs to be comprehensive, coordinated and immediate.

“First steps involve addressing root causes, improving processes and equipping cyber professionals with a greater ranger of strategic skills," Dr. Stanger continued. “Bringing more people into the cybersecurity workforce helps, but only if we place them into healthy environments. Before we start talking about artificial intelligence and automation, let’s create a mature environment where our human cyber talent can thrive.”

Nearly 17,000 cybersecurity job openings are expected to be available across Australia in 2024, according to a forecast from AUCyber Explorer, an interactive tool that tracks the state of the country’s cyber security job market.

Dr. Stanger will discuss the critical need for hands-on, practical cybersecurity skills and talent in two of his conference sessions.

On 25 March, he’ll speak on critical cybersecurity skills for today's attack surface, including a discussion on how professional certifications, such as CompTIA Security+, help cyber professionals elevate their knowledge and skills. Later that day he’ll be joined by Louis Cremen, lead cyber security instructor for Lumify, Australia's largest corporate IT training provider. Together they will lead a conversation on the skills and best practices needed to navigate dynamic attack surfaces.

On 26 March Dr. Stanger returns to the stage for a session titled “How we lost our way (and how we can get back on course): Navigating today’s toughest cybersecurity challenges.”

Dr. Stanger has consulted with corporate and government leaders worldwide about cybersecurity, emerging technologies, open source, and workforce development for over 25 years. He has worked with organizations in a variety of industry sectors, including technology, government, healthcare, defense, retail, education, finance and others. He is a member of the Forbes Technology Council, and a long-time member of the AFCEA Cyber Committee. He sits on the ATARC Cloud Security and Future of Secure Work roundtables, the Aerospace Industries Association Data Council, and the APUS School of IT Advisory Council. He also leads the C3, a consortium of leading cybersecurity certification entities, such as ISACA, ISC2, and SANS GIAC.
