This month Jason Etherington, Learning and Talent Development Manager for Xerox and Executive Council member shares his insight on how small changes can build big results.

A business is a little like an old fashioned Meccano kit, there are lots of small components that put together in the right way create a finished model. With the day to day running of a business there are many things that scream for attention and focus, which means we don’t necessarily have time to address or make major changes. Combine this with the worry and concern business owners may have of making big changes, and often we can get stuck with the status quo.

However, you can make small changes that when combined can have big effect on performance. This method of reviewing elements of your business to identify and make small changes, is often referred to as marginal gains, and has been used to great effect by Team Sky, Olympic cycling team and businesses.

Start to think about what you would like to improve? Create a list of the process and any factors that can impact on the outcome.  Break down and map the processes, taking time to step back and review.  Once you have a good picture, start to question, why steps are needed and how elements impact? Then look to identify any small areas in the process that could be changed to improve it.

You may be surprised that little changes across your business can really have a positive impact on the outcome.
