Last week, a large number of CompTIA staff participated in our annual volunteer day, spending our time at Spencer Technology Academy on the west side of Chicago. The school is home to a bright eyed and energetic bunch of kids in grades K through 8. Some of our group worked to clear and beautify an overgrown court yard, while others worked with students to create decorative mosaics spelling out the school’s name, painted the teacher’s lounge and redrew the basketball courts on a playg ...

Heading into this Veterans Day weekend, we’d like to take a second to emphasize how important it is to support our nation’s veterans as they return home from war. The U.S. continues to suffer from high unemployment overall and veterans are no exception; as many as 850,000 veterans are currently out of work and a million more will be seeking employment in the next five years.
This is unfortunate, as veterans know what hard work is and frequently enter (or re-enter) the workforce wit ...

This week, the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations issued an alarming report, U.S. Education Reform and National Security, on the connection between our comparatively weak schools and how they put America at a national security risk. The report notes that while the United States invests more in K-12 public education than many other developed countries, its students are ill-prepared to compete with their global peers. U.S. students rank 14th in reading, 25th in math, and 17th in science compared to ...

On Veterans Day last November, we saw a number of stories about the state of unemployment among the veterans community. It was startling enough to learn the unemployment rate among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans was 33 percent higher than the overall population, but if you dig a little deeper, you realize the picture gets far darker. As the jobs picture improves for more Americans, among our youngest veterans, those 18 to 24 years old, the jobless rate continues to hover near 30 percent, up from ...
