Early in 2011, CompTIA issued a challenge to all of the member communities:  identify an IT related charity to support with a donation of $5000.

The EMEA ITSS community adopted Close the Gap, a UN Global Alliance partner based in Brussels that helps bridge the digital divide by offering cost-efficient high-quality used IT-equipment to projects in developing countries.

Close the Gap follows a five-step process to ensure the integrity of the program:

  1. Material donation,

  2. Material reconditioning,

  3. Beneficiary project selection (schools, hospitals and other projects focusing on improvement of educational and information facilities),

  4. Material shipment and

  5. Project follow-up.

At the EMEA ITSS community meeting last week, a representative from Close the Gap spoke to us about the organization and how our contributions are being used.  The $5000 donated by CompTIA was used to equip two computer rooms in Ugandan secondary schools.   We also discussed ways that the companies attending the meeting could support Close the Gap.

Together we are making a difference. Thank you for making this opportunity possible.
