Astrix Integrated Systems — a specialist IT and network support business based in Abercynon, South Wales — grew to such a place in 10 years that its technical director, Mostyn Thomas, identified the need for a more systemized approach to the way the company provided infrastructure, security, monitoring and onsite or remote support.
“As our team grew, we aimed for a mix of ‘big enough to cope and small enough to care,’” Thomas said, “but in practice, we risked losing the personal touch of a smaller business without gaining the agility of a larger operation.”
To help the growing support business, Thomas purchased Autotask, a PSA tool designed to systemize growing IT companies. Then, after exploring CompTIA’s Trustmark+ program, he decided that accreditation would be the best way to implement the new software — and to make sure questions were asked, so it could be applied in the most effective ways.
Earning a Trustmark
In the run-up to assessment, each strand of Astrix went under the microscope. CompTIA Trustmarks are highly coveted businesses credentials that distinguish leaders in the ICT industry. Accreditation is awarded to those who show the ability to develop and delivery first-class ICT solutions, including best practices in organizational management, company direction, business generation, services delivery and operations and customer relations.
Guided by the program materials, Thomas’s team developed new proof and tracking systems, creating consistency and a solid evidence base for every process.
Since being awarded its Trustmark+ in February 2013, Astrix has implemented a standardized bidding process, cash flow forecasting and a new recruitment system for consistent integration of new staff. And further improvements are scheduled, to be phased in one after another.
“Looking ahead, it’s great to know that I’m moving in the right direction ... and to have all the tools I’m going to need as the business continues to grow,” Thomas said.
