Put Some Order (and Savings) in Your Law

There is nothing like watching a courtroom drama on TV when the prosecutor has the suspect on the ropes and is slowly wringing him in with the final line of questioning. Whether you’re a fan of Law & Order (insert your favorite version here), JAG or any other show with a legal theme, you likely root for the good guys to prevail in the end. When the situation occurs on television, it’s entertaining. But when you’re called into court to face criminal charges or answer a civil lawsuit in real life, it’s not so amusing. That’s why access to a skilled legal team should be a priority for any business today.

Of course most companies want to ensure their in compliance with all the federal, state and local regulations, but budget limitations may cause them to cut some corners. Experienced legal representation doesn’t come cheap; so many businesses only call their lawyer for critical needs and leverage other resources when they have lesser issues to deal with. The CompTIA Small Business Owners Community identified this as a significant problem and started an initiative to build cost-effective solutions for IT service providers. This collaborative effort resulted in CompTIA Legal Resources, a comprehensive set of legal resources tailored for the unique needs of IT companies. Not only does this web-based collection of tools, templates and education address the shortage of quality materials, but it’s free to of our members!

 Legal Resources is divided into several sections:

• Starting Your Business—discover how to obtain a license, select a name, register trademarks, organize the business, and avoid HR pitfalls.


• Maintaining Your Business – provides agreement templates for service levels, software licensing, consulting services and a coordinated FAQ page to use as a guide.


• Succession Planning – includes information for business owners considering selling their business, including developing buy/sell agreements, business dissolution and more.


• Technology Law – covers the latest legal issues affect IT businesses.

One final feature of CompTIA Legal Resources is the ability for members to submit a legal question to a qualified attorney—at no cost. The association’s in-house and outside legal team will provide you with answers to questions concerning virtually every aspect of your business. Though they won’t replace a lawyer in every instance, these comprehensive yet easy-to-use resources help IT service providers to follow proper industry compliance guidelines, while saving some money at the same time!
