The Hill’s Congress Blog and
TMCnet.com, Todd and David noted that Congress’s challenge, moving forward, will be to protect consumers while encouraging new innovations online.
Some of their recommendations include:
- Providing the FTC with the discretion and flexibility to adapt, update and strengthen the Fair Information Practice Principles Act;
- Empowering the FTC to create an Online Consumer Protection bureau to focus exclusively on online crime; and
- Creating a safe harbor program to help distinguish between good actors that slip up and bad actors that aim to do bad things
Todd and David noted that this issue is only going to increase in importance: “As we move forward into the brave new world, consumers need to not only feel secure as they do business and interact online – they need to be secure online. Online privacy will only grow in importance in the years to come, not only to consumers, but also for the companies working to earn their trust.”
